Letter: Women’s emotional touch is needed in tech sector

News

With the recent explosion of public discourse around AI, largely as a result of ChatGPT, it is no surprise that even dating apps are now embracing the software, as written about by Elaine Moore (“AI entering the dating pool is a bleak prospect”, Opinion, August 1).

There is indeed a possibility that such apps could lose their personal touch as they become dependent on software to generate human sentiment, however AI is here to stay and so wherever it is built and used, it needs to be representative.

AI requires humans to build it and, as we know, women still face barriers when it comes to entering the world of tech. Part of this is that women are exposed to the industry less due to societal bias or a lack of non-traditional entry routes. In order for tech such as AI to be understanding and empathetic, its creation and implementation must be by as broad and diverse a range of people as possible, meaning we need more women in the industry.

So more must be done to ensure this is the norm, rather than the exception, and this includes placing greater value on people returning to the workforce who want to resume or embark on a new career in tech.
