There were useful sartorial tips in Teo van den Broeke’s article (FT Weekend, July 30) about managing after that heart-stopping moment when the baggage conveyor belt halts and your bags have not arrived. I am still waiting for KLM to find and return my luggage after a month. Having spent more hours than I dare count trying to navigate the best way to claim compensation, my top handy hints are as follows:
1. Take photos of the contents of your suitcase to use if you have to claim. 2. Make sure you have selected baggage cover in your travel insurance — it’s not standard with many policies.
3. Take hand luggage if you can. It’s amazing how little you can live with.

Ideally of course, don’t fly at all. That is the best thing for the environment — and blood pressure.
